Day 9, Prague

Today was our first full day in Prague, and right away we found that there's far more to see than we'll ever have time to see. We took a taxi to the old town section of the city and hopped on one of those horse and carriage rides. The weather was beautiful and sunny today (just like every day of this trip so far), so it was really a pleasure to be out and about, surrounded by so many beautifully decorated buildings. It was nice to sit outside at a cafe and drink some wine, getting out of the river of tourists for a while...
This evening we went to the state opera house and saw the ballet, "Lady of the Camellias," which is the same story and music as "La Traviata"-- one of Gramma's favorites. The ballet was a little strange at first, but I really thought it was all worth it for the last scene. This beautiful woman is in her bare feet, dancing with two men: her lover, and death. It's great. Another sad ending, I'm afraid. Gramma and I found out the hard way that just because you feel all special having a box at the opera house all to yourself, there's no way to guarantee you'll have a comfortable seat. We could see and hear just fine, but our behinds were sore! Tomorrow we're going to see "Rusalka" at the National Theatre, which at least from the outside looks like a much grander building than the opera house. I guess in Prague they just have ballets and operas in any building they choose. Operas in the theatre, ballets in the opera house... I certainly don't mind! Just one thing that did strike me as strange here-- Our taxi driver who brought us back from the ballet tonight had a little television on his dashboard, and he was totally watching tv while he drove! It was like the cooking channel or something. Gramma and I agree that's just going too far.
